US lifts ban on lethal virus experiments despite security risks
Published20 December 2017
The US government has lifted a three-year ban on making lethal viruses in the lab, saying the potential benefits of disease preparedness outweigh the risks.
Labs will now be able to manufacture strains of influenza, Sars and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers).
The ban was imposed following safety breaches at federal institutions involving anthrax and avian flu.
Now a scientific review panel will have to green-light each research proposal.
It will only be allowed to go ahead if the panel determines there is no safer way to conduct the research and that the benefits it will provide justify the risk.
Critics say such "gain-of-function" research still risks creating an accidental pandemic.
But supporters of removing the ban say many US states are poorly prepared for an almost-inevitable outbreak of a deadly virus.
"I believe nature is the ultimate bioterrorist and we need to do all we can to stay one step ahead," said Samuel Stanley, chairman of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, which provided guidance on the new policy.
"Basic research on these agents by laboratories that have shown they can do this work safely is key to global security."
The ban was imposed in 2014 after embarrassing safety lapses including:
Dozens of workers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) being exposed to anthrax bacteria
Long forgotten vials of smallpox left in a cardboard box being discovered at a research centre near Washington
In addition, there was concern that research into transmissible pathogens, which is published, could be used to deliberately engineer a mutant virus.

Wuhan scientists planned to release coronavirus particles into bats 18 months before outbreak
Explosive, leaked papers show Wuhan scientists planned to release coronaviruses into bats just 18 months before the deadly Covid outbreak emerged.
Scientists planned to conduct risky, multimillion-dollar experiments involving bats and coronaviruses in China just 18 months before the lethal Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees, leaked documents have revealed.
The papers show scientists from Wuhan and the US had planned to release coronavirus particles into Chinese bats in order to then vaccinate them against diseases which could be transmitted to humans, and had asked for $US14 million from the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund the project.
The 2018 proposal was to “synthesise spike glycoproteins which bind to human cell receptors and insert them into SARSr-CoV backbones to assess whether they can cause SARS-like disease”.
Under the proposal, scientists wanted to genetically enhance airborne coronaviruses and release aerosols containing “novel chimeric spike proteins” among cave bats in Yunnan in China, as well as alter coronaviruses to more easily infect humans by introducing “human-specific cleavage sites” to bat coronaviruses.
The idea behind the research was to discover the risks posed by coronaviruses, as well as ways of preventing outbreaks and vaccinating bats against illnesses.
“The proposal hardly addresses or discusses ethical, legal, and social issues,” the rejection continues.
“It is clear that the proposed project led by Peter Daszak could have put local communities at risk.”

Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything, told Teen Vogue. “[Eco-fascism] argues [climate change] is God’s will, that there are too many people anyway, so there’s going to be a great purge and perhaps that’s all for the best. It’s environmentalism through genocide.”
The young man accused of killing 22 people in El Paso, Texas, last summer included eco-fascist ideas in his manifesto, revealing that his targeting of a Walmart frequented by Mexican immigrants wasn’t a coincidence. The young man accused of carrying out a horrific mass shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, last spring allegedly shared similar beliefs.
“If you look at where there continues to be the highest levels of population growth, it’s the poorest parts of the world with the lowest carbon footprints,” Klein added. “But when [that conversation] immediately moves the discussion to overpopulation, we’re changing the subject from unsustainable overconsumption by the rich to the procreation habits of the poor, and that’s a very political decision.”
Eco-fascism is not exclusive to the right. Eco-fascist myths have appeared in the narratives around the COVID-19 pandemic. Klein explained that the messaging behind viral videos of wild animals reentering environments — such as doctored videos of dolphins swimming in Venetian canals — can lead to a dangerous narrative insinuating “humans are the virus,” setting a tone of genocidal language.
“This is time to be really vigilant about any idea that this pandemic is weeding out people who needed to be weeded out anyway,” added Klein. “These are fascist logistics.”

But eco-fascism is not the fringe hippie movement usually associated with ecoterrorism. It's a belief that the only way to deal with climate change is through eugenics and the brutal suppression of migrants. The movement's founding father was Madison Grant, who started the first organizations dedicated to protecting California redwoods and American buffalo. He was also a staunch supporter of race science who, as president of the Bronx Zoo, put Ota Benga, a member of the Mbuti tribe kidnapped from Congo, on display in a cage with apes in 1906. He published The Passing of the Great Race, or The Racial Basis of European History in 1916, warning of the decline of the "Nordic" race, and wrote elsewhere that his generation had "the responsibility of saying what forms of life shall be preserved." His racial theory inspired Anders Breivik, the man who massacred 77 people at a Norwegian youth camp in 2011. But his fusion of white supremacy and environmental conservation also lingers.
Eco-fascism relies heavily on a concept called "deep ecology," the idea that the only way to preserve life on Earth is to dramatically—forcefully, if necessary—reduce the human population. It's best summed up by "lifeboat ethics," as eco-fascist and radical ecologist Pentti Linkola put it: "When the lifeboat is full, those who hate life will try to load it with more people and sink the lot. Those who love and respect life will take the ship’s axe and sever the extra hands that cling to the sides."

My two cents

People Aren’t Bad for the Planet—Capitalism Is
In the past few months, thousands of people have died around the world from complications stemming from the coronavirus. Economies are on the brink of collapse, millions are facing layoffs and job insecurity, and if we don’t flatten the curve, it’s only going to get worse. As governments across the globe begin enforcing lockdowns and ordering residents to shelter in place to curb the spread of COVID-19, everyday life has been more or less brought to a halt: There’s no more rush-hour traffic, packed trains, or trash-rendering events. The resulting stillness has slashed down air pollution rates from Los Angeles to China, an unexpected benefit in the face of so many losses.
Naturally, some people are trying to focus on the good things, from viral-but-fake posts boasting about dolphins returning to Venice’s canals (now a meme) to the fact we’re finding ourselves with cleaner air. However, there’s a slippery slope when statements go beyond rejoicing the return to nature and begin justifying human deaths to preserve the environment. As climate activist Jamie Margolin put it in a tweet, saying,“‘the weak will die but it’s okay because it helps the climate’ is not climate justice. That is ecofascism.” Ecofascism is defined as governments exerting power to protect the environment at the cost of individual life.
