Int'l Criminal Court Says CIA, US Forces in Afghanistan Committed Torture
Evidence suggests that the CIA and US forces in Afghanistan committed torture and other war crimes during interrogations, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda said Monday.
"The information available provides a reasonable basis to believe that, in the course of interrogating these detainees, and in conduct supporting those interrogations, members of the US armed forces and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) resorted to techniques amounting to the commission of the war crimes of torture, cruel treatment, outrages upon personal dignity, and rape," the prosecutor said in her annual Report on Preliminary Examination Activities. Alleged US war crimes also reportedly extended to secret detention facilities in Eastern Europe. ( Ukrajina ? )

Riyadh has warned the incoming US president Donald Trump of consequences if he chooses to stick to his election promise to block Saudi oil imports.
During the election campaign, Trump promised to make the US energy sector independent from “our foes and the oil cartels” and to create “complete American energy independence."

Feeling the oil crunch: Saudi Arabia cancels $266bn in projects
Trump was referring the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), led by Saudi Arabia.
The Saudis said Trump should be careful before making such a drastic decision.
“At his heart President-elect Trump will see the benefits and I think the oil industry will also be advising him accordingly that blocking trade in any product is not healthy,” Saudi Energy Minister and Aramco chairman Khalid Al-Falih told the Financial Times.
The de facto OPEC leader is the largest Middle East oil supplier to the US. However, most of America's oil is produced domestically or imported from Canada. The Saudis have an 11 percent share in US crude oil imports, while Canada has 40 percent. OPEC’s total share of US oil imports is 31 percent.
In 2015, the US imported about 9.4 million barrels of oil per day from about 88 countries, says the government-run Energy Information Administration. The country consumed 7.08 billion barrels of petroleum products, or about 19.4 million barrels per day.
“The US is sort of the flag-bearer for capitalism and free markets,” according to Al-Falih. “The US continues to be a very important part of a global industry that is interconnected, that is dealing with a fungible commodity which is crude oil. So having equalization through free trade is very healthy for oil,” he said.
According to Falih, the Saudis are waiting for Trump’s presidency, as his presidential campaign had amounted to “50,000 feet announcements” that may change.

Trump offers ‘Russia-loving’ Michael Flynn national security adviser post

President-elect Donald Trump has named retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as his new national security adviser, according to a close source. The former DIA chief has been criticized in US circles for refusing to take an anti-Russian stance.
The 57-year-old three-star general, who once ran the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), is considered a controversial figure in US circles for a number of reasons. In May, he claimed in an Al Jazeera interview that the rise of Islamic extremism in the Middle East, including the emergence of Al-Nusra Front and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria, was not the result of chance or ignorance – but of calculated thinking.
General Flynn dismissed Al Jazeera’s suggestion that the Obama administration had simply overlooked the DIA’s analysis, instead arguing that the government had “turned a blind eye” on his agency on purpose.“I think it was a decision. I think it was a willful decision,” the former DIA chief said, referring to a highly-contentious 2012 DIA memo.

The Pentagon veteran, who was a key figure in the Bush administration’s War on Terror, also lambasted Washington for criticizing Russia’s plans to fight Islamic State in Syria. Flynn told RT in October that he strongly believes that “Russia and the United States working together and trying to work with the other partners that we all have in this region can come up with some other solutions.”
“We have to understand as Americans that Russia also has foreign policy; Russia also has a national security strategy. And I think that we failed to understand what that is,” said the former DIA chief.
Flynn was heavily criticized for taking this position. In a Washington Post interview, Dana Priest tried to portray him as a supporter of Russia, and therefore the antithesis of everything Washington stands for. The interviewer grilled Flynn about a trip he had taken to Moscow, when he was among the speakers and panel guests at an RT conference celebrating its first 10 years on air, and met with President Vladimir Putin. When Priest questioned Flynn about his opinion of RT, the general replied that he didn’t see a difference between the work of RT and US news networks like MSNBC and CNN.

In US circles, the Pentagon veteran is seen by some as representing the legacy of firebrand former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. As the former commander of special ops in Iraq and Afghanistan, he is considered to be “one of the most influential figures in the dramatic post-9/11 expansion of the role of US Special Operations forces globally,” the Intercept’s Jeremy Scahill wrote in September.

Appointment to the post of national security adviser does not require confirmation by the Senate, and the choice of the former DIA chief was merely a rumor until it was confirmed on November 18 by NBC, which spoke to an official close to the transition. They would not say yet if Flynn has accepted the post.
Flynn will be replacing Susan Rice, and is considered to be part of Donald Trump’s cabinet reshuffle that aims to reflect a tougher stance toward both friends and rivals. Flynn was DIA chief in 2012-2014, but reportedly left early due to clashes with senior Obama officials. He is also known for proposing an overhaul of the DIA that was met with opposition.
The controversial figure and Trump loyalist is perhaps best known to the American public for making incendiary remarks about Islam in past tweets, such as the one claiming that it is “rational” to fear Muslims.
There continues to be anxiety about what the new US president will do on a whole series of issues, including, but not limited to, Syria, Iran, and Russia. Trump is expected to make his first international appearance at this summer’s G20 and NATO summits.

NATO member Turkey says it is in talks with Russia to purchase advanced S-400 long-range air defense missile systems. Earlier, Ankara backed out of a similar deal with China, citing Beijing’s reluctance to transfer technology.
The negotiations were confirmed Friday by Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik, who said Russia’s attitude toward the potential deal was positive.
Undersecretary of Defense Industries Ismail Demir had earlier said Turkey was prepared to work with “any interested party,”including Russia and China, on developing its long-range air defense capabilities.
“We have already made clear that we will be in cooperation with countries and companies that would lend support to us throughout this process. We have said our doors are open and that we are willing to cooperate,” he said, as cited by Hurriyet Daily

NATO member Turkey to buy $3.4 billion worth of incompatible Chinese antimissiles
Turkey intends to spend $3.4 billion to develop a domestic long-range anti-missile shield. The 2013 tender, in which Russia’s S-400 system competed with US-made Patriot PAC-3, European SAMP/T Aster 30 and China’s FD-2000 systems – the export version of HQ-9 – was won by the Chinese bid.
The deal, which sparked concern among other NATO members over compatibility issues and potential ramifications for Turkey’s contribution to the alliance, stalled and was ultimately cancelled in 2015. The contract discussions reportedly broke down because Ankara and Beijing couldn’t agree on the transfer of technology, which Turkey sees as crucial for having a domestic defense industry capable of servicing all national needs independently from foreign nations.
Some defense analysts saw the China deal as a Turkish ploy to attain a more favorable position in negotiations with European and American suppliers.
“To expect a country that relies on NATO for more than half of its radar data to invest billions in a missile defense system that is not compatible with this infrastructure was not sensible,” researchers Mustafa Kibaroglu and Selim Sazak wrote on DefenseOne.com
Lacking hardware of its own, Turkey has to rely on other NATO members for anti-missile protection. In August of last year, Ankara was angered by the US decision to withdraw Patriot missiles from Turkey’s border with Syria, which had been deployed in 2013 to protect Turkey from a possible cross-border attack.
Washington denied speculation that the move was in retaliation for Turkish attacks on Kurdish militia forces in Iraq, which were – and continue to be – America’s allies in its war against terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). The news broke two weeks after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revived talks with China on the missile defense deal during a visit to Beijing.

Texas official under fire over Facebook post suggesting Hiroshima type action on Muslim world
A Texas official will not apologize for a shared post on his Facebook page that insinuates an atomic bomb should be dropped on "the Muslim world." The state's Department of Agriculture claimed he did not personally share the post.

The UN General Assembly has adopted resolution on necessity to combat glorification of Nazism, modern forms of racism, discrimination and xenophobia with the majority of votes. Only tree countries stood against the document, among which turned out to be Ukraine, the US and Palau.

Donald Trump's team ignores phone talk with Ukraine's Poroshenko

The team of Donald Trump did not attach much importance to his first conversation as president with the head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. Trump's press service did not even publish a release about the conversation, although the team of the US president-elect did cover Donald Trump's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, Ukraine remains very proud of Poroshenko's conversation with Trump. According to Kiev officials, Poroshenko assured Trump of his readiness for active cooperation to strengthen strategic partnership. Poroshenko also invited Trump to pay a visit to Ukraine "at a convenient time."
Noteworthy, Donald Trump did not wish to meet Ukrainian President Poroshenko in September, at the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Ukrainian authorities do not lose hope. Representatives of the Poroshenko administration have announced their readiness to cooperate with US President elect Donald Trump. Former Odessa region Governor and Georgian ex-president Mikhail Saakashvili said that he had known Trump for many years.
Poroshenko himself said during the election process in the USA that Ukraine would continue receiving support from the United States.
Meanwhile, political analysts and experts believe that Ukraine may face serious problems because of Donald Trump's victory in the election. In particular, the billionaire announced his intention to revise USA's spending for the support of democracies in third countries.
