Michie is a member of the Communist Party of Britain and was also member of its predecessor the Communist Party of Great Britain. In March 2018, she spoke at a public meeting saying that communists should be "working full tilt" for the election of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister.
As a clinical psychologist she worked with adults and families on topics covering antenatal care, genetic counselling and occupational stress. Her later career interests have been in designing and evaluating methods of behavioural change, especially in relation to wellbeing and health improvement
In 2009, Michie became a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and convened its subgroup, the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Behaviour group
In 2019, Michie was named winner of the British Psychological Society Research Board’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her world-leading work creating a coherent language of behaviour change

The Communist Party of Britain (CPB) is a communist party in Great Britain which emerged from a dispute between Eurocommunists and Marxist-Leninists in the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1988. It follows Marxist-Leninist theory and supports what it regards as existing socialist states, and has fraternal relationships with the Cuban, Chinese, Lao and Vietnamese communist parties. It is affiliated nationally to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign[9] and the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign. It is a member of the International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties, together with 117 other political parties.

The party takes the traditional Marxist approach to capitalism, saying that it is at fault for wars, climate change, and corruption. It claims that 'capitalism must be overthrown in the interests of the working class and humanity.'

The party has coined the term 'super-exploitation' to describe the treatment of migrant workers, whose jobs come with poor conditions and low pay. They also use it to describe the gap between the pay of men and women who are doing the same job. They claim that this 'super-exploitation' is backed by the EU and also the racist and sexist attitudes which exist in Britain due to its colonial history.
It criticises right-wing political parties for holding onto these prejudices.
The party also believes that neoliberalism leads to inequality, which in turn leads to attacks on women's and ethnic minorities' rights

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the party's Eurocommunist leadership disbanded the party, establishing the Democratic Left.
