This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Yugo’s arrival in America, imported here by master pitchman Malcolm Bricklin. Curiously, even before Bricklin first laid eyes on the car, he’d already gone bust four times, three of which were automotive. He had tanked as a Subaru importer, did fiscal harm to the province of New Brunswick (where his gullwing Bricklin SV-1 was built), and fizzled again when he imported Fiats as Pininfarina Spiders and Bertone X1/9s.
With that résumé in hand, Bricklin persuaded Crvena Zastava, the Communist Yugoslavian carmaker whose greatest achievement would be being bombed by NATO in 1999, to make Yugos palatable for U.S. consumption, each selling for as little as $4400. Unfortunately, setting up a dealer network, shipping the cars, and paying for their expected warranty claims would be costly. Bricklin thus barnstormed the country, drumming up financing from 21 separate investors, including shipping magnate Per Arneberg, Nordic American Bank, and various members of his own family.
Meanwhile, he was ensconced in a $2.3 million 4500-acre ranch in Colorado, complete with a glass-enclosed swimming pool, a hunting lodge, a landing pad for his helicopter, and the body of a Yugo proudly protruding from the roof of his barn.
...
Vuic’s book is thoroughly researched, with hundreds of annotations. Its true genius, however, is its fine focus not on the Yugo itself, but on Bricklin the man—an outsized opportunist, a thick-skinned megacapitalist whose modus operandi was to overpromise and underdeliver, a Mr. Magoo oblivious to the wreckage all around him, a charming marketing manipulator who realizes he has crossed the line only when the subpoenas start flying. In short, a fascinating story well told.

Here are some quotes from the 1986 road test of the Yugo GV
"Damn the test drive, Martha. This sucker is cheap!"
"Driving the boxy little front-driver is about as much fun as driving your couch."
"For big city dwellers who play the daily creative parking game, this car is hard to beat."
"The plastic that covers the dash is a constant reminder that petrochemical products do indeed come from decomposed dinosaurs."
"A recon mission under the hood reveals the Yugo's international origins. Packard electrical connections are in evidence. Bosch is represented by the ignition coil and the distributor. Lancia makes it's contribution in the form of the oil filter."
"The absence of a tachometer makes it hard to know when to upshift, so Yugo has built in a Pavlonian method of acoustic negative reinforcement. Bring the engine up to somewhere near where the redline should be and it sets up a deafening, resonant drone drone that tells you to shift before you damage something."
"Do-it-yourselfers will find the engine easy to work on. The spark plugs, the oil and fuel filters, the distributor, and most most major components are very accessible. The Yugo looks like an ideal training ground for shade-tree mechanics."
"The shift mechanism feels as if it was designed by Cap'n Crunch."
"Once underway, the Yugo feels lively enough if you don't mind the background noise of keeping the little engine on the cam."- Tony Assenza.
"One thing about the GV: you never have to wonder how Yugo saves you money; all the missing items are right there in every other car around you."-Larry Griffin
"It's obvious to me that the Yugo GV is inferior to every other car sold in America."
So how did the Yugo actually do durig the test? let's take a look at the results:
Acceleration:
0-60 in 14.0 seconds
1/4 mile in 19.5 seconds
Top Speed: 86mph@5250rpm
Braking 70-0 in 202 feet.
Brake fade: moderate

https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a21082360/a-quick-history-of-the-yugo-the-worst-car-in-history/
In May 1984, entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin was in a bind. His venture, the importation of Pininfarina Spiders and Bertone X1/9s, was failing, and, facing bankruptcy, he had 120 days to find a more profitable car to sell here. So Bricklin scoured the world, traveling first to England, where he tried to land Jaguar, then to Serbia, a republic of what was then communist Yugoslavia. It was there, in the parking lot of Belgrade’s Hotel InterContinental, that he and former Fiat executive Tony Ciminera first examined a Fiat-based hatchback called the Yugo.
“I’m looking at [the car] and I said, ‘Ugh! This is really primitive!’ ” recalls Ciminera. But Bricklin was desperate. So the next day, he and Ciminera toured the Yugo factory, the owner of which, the aptly named Crvena Zastava (or Red Flag) Works, also made machine guns. The building was dark, the floors greasy, and Ciminera was shocked to discover smoking workers stepping into cars with dirty shoes on and newly stamped fenders being thrown into bins. It was a disaster. But because the Yugo cost about $2000 wholesale, Bricklin figured he could cover the car’s homologation and sell it stateside for just $3990, which he did in August 1985.
Although it was a communist-made car sold in Reagan’s America, dealers had customers lining up 10 deep to buy one. Yugo America sold an astonishing 1050 cars in a single day. But what goes up must come down. There were serious quality issues. The car was slow, crawling to 60 mph in 14 seconds and topping out at 86 mph. Then came the reviews. C/D’s then technical director, Csaba Csere, wrote, “It’s obvious to me that the Yugo GV is inferior to every other car sold in America.”
The hits kept coming. The car performed poorly in crash tests, sales plummeted, and soon everyone was ripping on it: Saturday Night Live, Leno, Letterman, The Simpsons. Kids told jokes about it, and one dealer in Philadelphia offered a “Toyugo” sale, but most buyers refused the free Yugo that came with the purchase of their Toyota. The end came in 1992, when, during the Yugoslav civil war, Yugo America went bankrupt (for a second time), and the United Nations issued a trade embargo on Serbia that included Yugo parts.
