Re: vječni UUOT
"Earth is floating on the waters like an island
Hanging from four rawhide ropes
Fastened at the top of the Sacred four directions
The ropes are tied to the ceiling of the sky
When the ropes break, this world will come
Tumbling down and all living things will fall with it and die..."
This entire harsh vocal passage is taken from Cherokee mythology, describing the creation of Earth.
The Cherokee people are the largest of the Southeast Indian tribes indigenous to the Appalachias.
According to the Cherokee myths, the creation of the world begins by animals looking for a place to settle after Gälûñ'lätï, the sky realm, is filled with animals and there is a need for space. That’s when Dâyuni'sï (Beaver’s Grandchild), the little water beetle volunteers to go look for a place in the water. When all trials to settle on the surface of the water prove futile, the beetle takes a chunk of soft mud from the bottom of the ocean and brings it to the surface, where it grows and becomes an island which we call the Earth. It was later fastened to the sky in the four cardinal directions, but no one remembers who did this.
The Indians are afraid of the time when the world becomes old and worn out, at which time the people will die, the four cords holding the earth will break and it will sink down to the ocean.
