Mars EDL done right
Curiosity seen suspended below its 21-meter-wide parachute (~69 ft) this image was captured by one of the Mars orbiters as the rover sped towards the surface of Mars on August 5, 2012.
The image was acquired by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) while if was positioned ~340 km (211 miles) away from the parachuting rover. Curiosity and its rocket-propelled backpack, contained within the conical-shaped back shell, had yet to be deployed. At the time, Curiosity was about three kilometers (two miles) above the Martian surface.
The supersonic parachute slowed down the spacecraft from about 1,450 down to 290 kph (900 to 180 mph). The parachute appears fully inflated and performing perfectly in this colourised version of the original monochrome image.
Details in the parachute, such as the band gap at the edges and the central hole, are clearly seen.
Curiosity and its rocket powered Skycrane was released from the back shell about one minute after this image was acquired at an altitude of about 1.6 km (1 mile).
The Skycrane lowered the rover the last 8 meters (27 ft) onto the surface of Mars.
