Russia and Turkey hold joint naval exercises in the Black Sea
9 March 2019
Russian and Turkish naval forces conducted a joint maneuver in the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Russia and Turkey have organized joint military exercises off the Black Sea, punctuated in particular by simulations of detection and deactivation of mines, according to the BSF unit of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Russian Black Sea Fleet and Turkish Naval Forces Vessels Performed an Exceeding Exercise to Improve Interoperability in Mine Risk Areas, Fleet Spokesperson said Friday of the Black Sea, Alexei Rulyov, quoted by the Russian news agency Sputnik.
These PASSEX-type exercises mobilized ships from the Black Sea Fleet’s Novorossiisk military base, made up of patrol Vassily Bykov and minesweeper Valentin Pikul as well as the ship Burgzada and the Turkish minesweeper, reports the head of the communication from the BSF unit, Alexei Roulev.
The exercises focused on scenarios of potential mine danger, said the official, adding that Turkish sailors were stationed in the port of Novorossiisk from March 6 to 8 as part of the national exercise Blue Motherland 2019.
The Russian-Turkish maneuvers are part of one of the milestones of the 2019 Blue Part, which included the visit by Turkish forces to a foreign port, the source said.
The joint Russian-Turkish exercises come as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan clarified the debate on Wednesday over the agreement between Moscow and Ankara on the purchase of S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft systems, saying his government would would not cancel the deal despite protests from his American ally.
“It’s over,” said Erdogan, noting that the signatures had already been affixed to the bottom of the documents and that the first delivery would be in July. “We are an independent Turkey, we are not slaves,” he added.
