SpaceX founder Elon Musk praised the Russian-built RD-180 rocket engine for looking awesome but said his bitter rivals Lockheed and Boeing ought to be ashamed of using it during their launches.
The eccentric tech billionaire said a few nice words about the RD-180 on Twitter, while mocking his competitors at the same time. “It’s embarrassing that Boeing and Lockheed need to use a Russian engine on Atlas,” the rocket-maker wrote on Saturday “but that engine design is brilliant.”

[ltr]That is mad level. But can we all agree that the RD-170 has been a little too comfortable at #1 for too long at 265 bar [img(16.05px,17px)]https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/72x72/1f609.png[/img] here’s hoping for 300 [img(16.05px,17px)]https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/72x72/1f91e.png[/img][/ltr]

The RD-180 was developed by NPO Energomash in the 1990s, based on an older Soviet model, RD-170. Since the early-2000s, the Colorado-based United Launch Alliance (ULA), jointly run by Boeing and Lockheed Martin, has been using the engine to power the first stages of its Atlas carrier rockets, including Atlas V.

The design Musk likes so much is not its only great feature. The ULA website calls RD-180 “a powerful combination of innovation and performance.” A research paper published by the company in 2011 described it as an “efficient, reliable engine,” that was “unmatched” among its competitors and “specifically tailored” for the Atlas family.
Overall, the Russian-built engine has been used in over 75 launches across the US, including in 2011 when NASA sent the Curiosity rover to Mars.
The reliance on RD-180 tech also landed the ULA in hot water as politicians grew increasingly wary of its dependence on Moscow. In 2016, Congress mandated the companies to phase out the use of the engine by 2022.

Russia may develop reusable first stages for its rockets, which would likely land horizontally rather than in the style of SpaceX’s Falcons, Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin has said. He also had words for SpaceX boss Elon Musk.
The new heavy Soyuz-5 rocket, currently developed by Russia, must become more powerful yet remain cheaper than the products supplied by the competitors, the recently-elected head of the Russian space corporation told TASS in an extensive interview on Thursday.

While Moscow is looking into adding reusable elements to the Soyuz-5 to further lower launch costs, reusability is not a universal solution to achieve this goal, Rogozin believes. Musk’s SpaceX, which is currently the only company to have launched reusable rockets commercially, manages to cut the costs by other means, the Russian space boss pointed out.
“Musk’s advantage is not the reusability but that the US government gives him opportunities for dumping [prices] on the market. Musk sells his launches twofold to the Pentagon, covering his losses on the commercial market and killing competitors, who lack such a generous state behind them,” Rogozin said.
Due to its geography, Russia is largely unable to make Falcon-style reusable boosters that would make vertical powered descent to a movable platform at sea, and so it has to follow an alternate path sticking to horizontal landings or relying on parachutes, he said.
“Given our geographical position we lack such capabilities. We cannot bring sea platforms to the Altai mountains or to permafrost plains of Yakutia,” Rogozin said. “Regarding the means to return stages, it can be made ‘plane-style’ or with a parachute system.”

Back in June, Russian officials have confirmed that a project of a plane-style reusable first stage for super light rockets has been presented to Roscosmos. The said rocket would be capable of lifting some 600 kg to a Sun-synchronous orbit around Earth – typically 600-800 km in altitude. The reusable booster would be able to perform up to 50 launches, requiring a replacement of the main engines afterwards. The system is expected to cut costs of launch nearly in two compared to conventional disposable lifters, the Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects has said.
The new project is loosely based on the early 2000s concept of a reusable first stage for the Angara-family rockets, dubbed ‘Baikal.’ The particular project never went beyond a full-scale model, which was displayed at a number of exhibitions.
Rogozin’s interview comes days after NASA said that it is “working really hard not to be dependent on the RD-180 engine,”made by Russia’s Energomash, but at the same time “absolutely” wants to keep its special partnership with Russia going. At the moment, estimates say that the United Launch Alliance (ULA) can’t launch Atlas V without the Russian rocket engines up until 2025 or even 2028.

NASA wants to maintain its unique cooperation with Russia to haul astronauts into space and continue to use RD-180 engines, while viable alternatives are being developed by US firms, the space agency’s administrator said.
“The United States of America is working really hard not to be dependent on the RD-180 engine,” Jim Bridenstine said on C-Span. “So, do we want to be dependent? No! Do we want to have a partnership? Absolutely.”
For years, the United Launch Alliance (ULA) has been relying on Energomash RD-180 engines to power the Atlas V rocket. However, geopolitical tensions and sanctions introduced by the US against Russia has prompted calls by US politicians to consider replacement of the Russian-supplied technology. Until a viable alternative is produced, the US wants to preserve its cooperation with Russia.

Houston, we have a problem: Russia threatens to stop supplying engines crucial for US space program
The 2018 US National Defense Authorization Act limits purchases of Russian rocket engines after December 31, 2022. But on Thursday, in response to the latest round of US sanctions, Russian lawmaker Sergey Ryabukhin warned that Moscow could consider cutting off supplies of the RD-180 before that deadline.
When the US introduced its initial set of sanctions against Moscow, American lawmakers made plenty of room for space exploration, Bridenstine pointed out.
“Space was specifically carved out because we wanted to continue to cooperate on space issues,” the administrator said, noting that he is keen to meet the head of the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos), which is currently blacklisted by the State Department. Earlier Roscosmos said that its Director General Dmitry Rogozin could hold talks with his counterpart in Baikonur, Kazakhstan in October.
“I intend to [meet Rogozin] in the near future,” Bridenstine said. “And we are working on how do we maintain this relationship given those [sanctions] constraints and I'm very confident that we’ll be able to work it out.”
“NASA represents an amazing soft power capability for the United State of America. When other channels of communication break down, nations can still communicate on space exploration and space discovery and science,” the 43-year-old noted.

At the same time, Bridenstine said he is “confident” that Boeing, SpaceX and other US companies will eventually produce viable and safe alternatives to the Russian engines. Earlier, it was reported that ULA, most likely, will continue to use Russian-produced engines until 2024-2025 or even up to 2028.

Meanwhile, to expedite the process of breaking America’s full dependence on Russia in crewed programs, NASA and Congress stepped up funding for commercial efforts, which should allow Boeing and SpaceX to begin launching astronauts into space from US soil. After NASA closed its 30-year Space Shuttle program in 2011, Russia and China remain the only two countries capable of putting a human into space.
A recent survey of public opinion by Pew showed that a vast majority of Americans (72 percent) believe that it is essential for their homeland –which once had put men on the Moon– to maintain its space “dominance”and “continue to be a world leader in space exploration.” An even larger number, 80 percent of Americans, believe that the International Space Station (ISS), which incorporated modules of the Russian space station that Moscow could not afford at the time, has been a “good investment” for their country.
However, while SpaceX and Boeing hurry to produce alternatives to the Russian engines and spacecraft to restore independent US access to space, only a third of Americans believe that private companies on their own “will ensure enough progress in this area even without NASA’s involvement.”
