ZAGREB, (Hina) – Officials of the public agency manages the facilities within the fortification of the Croatian coastal city of Sibenik, on Thursday presented a new publication, “Sibenik: A City of Fortresses,” on the occasion of European Fortress Day which is being held from September 20 to 22 under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture.
The Sibenik-based public agency “Tvrdjava Kulture Sibenik”, which is a member of the European Federation of Fortified Sites “EFFORTS”, has joined the initiative, which is being held for the first time and is aimed at presenting Europe’s forts and fortifications to a larger European public.
The central event of the three-day programme in Sibenik will be a conference on new concepts of management in culture and will be held in Sibenik’s Sv. Mihovil fortress.

Experts in the field of cultural management, museology and communications, including a member of EFFORTS management board, Andrea Bonifacio, will present contemporary trends including monumental heritage in everyday life in local communities.
The three-day programme will present lectures, panel discussions and exhibitions and will close on Saturday, September 22, with the opening of an exhibition – Architectural Defence: A profile of the authors of Sibenik’s 16th and 17th-century fortresses.
Sibenik’s St. Nicholas Fortress, Zadar’s fortified city walls inscribed on UNESCO list
In July  2017, Sibenik’s St. Nicholas Fortress and Zadar’s fortified city walls and gates were officially inscribed on UNESCO’s protected world heritage list at the 41st meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Krakow.

The two coastal sites were inscribed as part of protected defence systems on the territory of the former Republic of Venice.
Sibenik’s St. Nicholas Fortress, one of the strongest fortifications on the Adriatic, and Zadar’s 3-km-long fortified city walls and gates were built in the 16th century by the then Republic of Venice as defence from invading Turks.
