Financial difficulty and 2018 fire
From 2014, the Museum faced budget cuts that dropped its maintenance to less than R$520,000 annually. The building fell into disrepair, evidenced by peeling wall material and exposed electrical wiring.[12] By June 2018, the Museum's 200th anniversary, it had reached a state of near-complete abandonment.[13]
The building was heavily damaged by a large fire on 2 September 2018.[8][10] Although some items were saved, it is believed that a large part of its 20 million archive were destroyed in the fire, though items stored in a separate building were not damaged.[9] First responders fighting the fire were hindered by a lack of water. Rio's fire chief claimed that two nearby fire hydrants had insufficient water, leaving firefighters to resort to pumping water from a nearby lake.[14]
The Museum building, located at the Quinta da Boa Vista park, as the São Cristóvāo palace dates back to the early 19th century, when it was donated to the Portuguese Royal family who renovated it into this grand building. After this, it was the residence of Emperor Pedro I and Pedro II of Brazil, until the country became a Republic. The Museum then took over the location in 1892.[4]
With continuing budget cuts since 2014, the museum did not receive the R$520,000 per year necessary for its maintenance. In 2015, the museum closed temporarily when cleaning and security staff could not be paid. Repairs to a popular exhibit hall had to be crowd funded, and by 2018 the maintenance budget had been cut by 90%.[5]
Preceding the fire, there were visible signs of decay, such as peeled walls and exposed wires.[6] The museum celebrated its 200th anniversary in June 2018 amidst a situation of partial abandonment, with no state ministers attending.[1][2][7]
The museum vice-director, Luiz Fernando Dias Duarte, pointed to neglect by successive governments.[8][9] He said that the curators “fought with different governments [...] [f]or many years", wanting "to get adequate resources to preserve what is now completely destroyed”. He expressed that, in response, he is feeling "total dismay and immense anger.”[1]
At the time of the fire the collection held by the museum was counted to be over 20 million pieces that spanned over 11,000 years of international history.[10]
