Angela Merkel 'firm favourite' for Nobel prize over refugee crisis
Speculation is mounting that Angela Merkel will win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her handling of the European refugee crisis and the war in Ukraine, just as public opinion in Germany is hardening on the migrant issue.
The German Chancellor has emerged as the firm favourite for the 2015 peace prize, the winner of which will be announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee next Friday.
But even as she is lauded on the international stage, Mrs Merkel is facing growing opposition to her refugee policy at home, where her personal approval rating with voters has plummeted nine percentage points in a single month, according to the findings of a new opinion poll.
Nominations for the peace prize are kept secret, and the days leading up to the announcement are traditionally filled with speculation and guesses. All the Nobel Committee will confirm is that there have been 276 nominations this year.
But Kristian Berg Harpviken, an expert who publishes a shortlist of likely winners each year, named Mrs Merkel as favourite.
“Angela Merkel will get the peace prize,” Mr Harpviken, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), told reporters. “She is the one who really took moral leadership and who turned the debate on refugee issues in a European context entirely around.”
Mrs Merkel has also been tipped to win for her efforts to end the Ukraine war, after she brought Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president, back to the negotiating table in February.
