BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:18 P.M.) – Today, the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) achieved a major advance against ISIS in Raqqa, officially capturing the rump of the southern city area from the terrorist group.
The accomplishment of this push by the SDF was marked by the linking up of its eastern and western pincers which have gradually sliced their way through Raqqa’s southern-most neighborhoods over the last eight weeks.
The link-up of the eastern and western pincers of SDF forces itself was a capitalization on advances made yesterday whereby the Kurdish-led alliance group captured the Nazlet Shahada district as well as most of the Hisham Bin Abd al-Malk district.
By this advance, the SDF has now restricted Islamic State control over Raqqa to the central and northern neighborhoods of city where all of the main battles are now expected to take place.
