Germany, EU Call For Stricter Gun Laws After Munich Killer Purchased His Illegal Weapon on the “Dark Web”
July 24, 2016 Comments Offon Germany, EU Call For Stricter Gun Laws After Munich Killer Purchased His Illegal Weapon on the “Dark Web”448 Views
The Munich killer, 18 year old David Ali Sonly, German born with Iranian citizenship, who targeted teenagers in a mall, killing nine and injuring dozens had purchased the weapon illegally. The Glock 9mm pistol that Bavarian police identified as the murder weapon was a prop gun that had been reactivated. It was traced by police back to 2014 Slovakia and purchased illegally by the killer in Germany.
German authorities have, not unexpectedly, had the obvious knee jerk reaction: More gun laws. Understandably, authorities feel helpless to prevent such attacks by those who had no criminal record and not on law enforcement radars.
Germany has some of the strictest gun laws. Yet those in Germany own more illegal guns than legal ones. Possession of the large amount of ammunition the killer had is also illegal in Germany. The laws allow a restricted amount of ammunition depending on the circumstance. Along with the unlicensed Glock 9mm pistol, the killer had 300 rounds of ammunition in his backpack.
A Daily Mail UK headline reads: “The strictest firearms laws in Europe but STILL four illegal guns for every registered weapon: Germany has 5.5 million guns belonging to 1.4 million people (according to data from the German Firearms Register).” The article points out that research by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in January estimated there are up to 20 million illegal firearms in Germany.”
The German gun laws became stricter after several mass shootings in 2006 and 2009. The law was tightened to the point that authorities have the right to check on where guns are stored when not in use, including the right to make spot checks.
The large ownership of illegal weapons in the hands of those living in Germany can often be traced to the black market which is aided by the border free European Union (the 1985 Schengen Agreement that abolished internal borders of EU member countries).
The “dark web”, according to a Telegraph which referred to a Süddeustche Zeitung new report,” is ‘An area of the internet not accessible without special software, used by criminals and paedophile networks.’
“Our gun laws are already very strict, and I think this is correct,” German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said. “In Europe, we want to make further progress with a common weapons policy. First we have to determine how the Munich perpetrators procured a weapon. Then we have to look very carefully at where to make legal changes,” the Telegraph quoted the German Minister’s statement to Bild am Sonntag news.
Police report that their investigations found no trace or links back to ISIS or other terror groups, but police did find a disturbing trail of documents and tools that the killer had amassed in his room on mass murders and murderers. The attack was well planned and the strategy was being laid out for a year, according to the German news local.de. Sonly created a phony web page on which he posed as a pretty teenage girl “Selina Akim.” He lured his victims to the Mc Donalds, the scene of the rampage, with offer of free food.
“He had been preparing (the shooting) for a year,” Bavarian police chief Robert Heimberger confirmed to reporters.
In that time, Sonly had spent two months as an inpatient in a mental hospital and was being treated for depression among other mental ailments as an outpatient at the time of the shooting.
Supposedly Sonly was motivated by a right wing anti Islam, anti feminism hate monger and militant killer Anders Breivik, who also targeted young people according to local police. Breivik had staged two attacks including using a bomb in Oslo and guns in Utoya which killed 77 people five years earlier. Ali Sonly carried out his murder spree in Munich on 22 July, the anniversary of that savage massacre in Norway 22 July 2011.
Bavarian police confirmed that Ali Sonly was “obsessed” with mass killers such as Norwegian rightwing fanatic Anders Behring Breivik and had no links to the Islamic State group according to local.de which reconfirmed reports from multiple other journals including the Daily Mail, the Telegraph and more.
Officials did not clarify in the reports why having stricter gun laws would prevent massacres such as the one in Munich.
Nor did they address whether some of the carnage could have been avoided if other Germans in the crowded mall who saw the shooter and had time to react would have been armed.
