Polish troops take part in a Nato military exercise
German chancellor Angela Merkel has blamed Russia for undermining European security, on the eve of the Nato summit where the alliance’s response to the threat posed by Moscow will loom large.
Leaders of Nato member countries will meet in Warsaw on Friday for a two-day summit amid fears in eastern Europe of Moscow’s territorial ambitions, fracturing unity on how to deal with Russia and anxiety among members of the alliance about the UK’s future commitments to European security post-Brexit.
Speaking in Berlin before she departed for a summit where Nato will announce new battle groups in four countries on the alliance’s eastern flank, Ms Merkel pledged support to the region.

She said Moscow had undermined European security in “words and deeds” by infringing Ukraine’s borders and “profoundly disturbed” Nato’s eastern members who “therefore require the unambiguous back-up of the alliance”.
Countries such as Poland have long called for a larger Nato presence in eastern Europe, fearful of any repeat of Russia’s invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its war with Georgia in 2008.
