Kasparov: Hrvatska je već pobjednik
I've spent much of the summer in beautiful Croatia, as I have nearly every year for decades. It used to be my training camp; now it is a family retreat with kids and a baby and rarely a chessboard in sight! I'm based in NYC now, but Croatia will always feel like home. Another difference is that I am now a Croatian citizen, and so politics here take on more meaning to me.
With a tight parliamentary election looming on September 11, I'm struck by the contrast with the election getting far more attention, in America. The main party leaders in the Croatian race are former prime minister Zoran Milanović and parliamentarian Andrej Plenković. I've had the pleasure to get to know them both, and I can say that Croatia is blessed with a very difficult choice! Both men are young, impressive, and well-respected leaders—educated, experienced, and intelligent, multi-lingual and pro-Europe, and both want to move Croatia forward into a dynamic future with ambitious education and economic platforms.
My family owes Zoran Milanović a great debt for granting us citizenship in our time of need, so I cannot be entirely objective in my analysis. But since it seems that my wife Dasha and I will split the family votes, we will have no impact on the result anyway! The future looks very bright for Croatia with choices like this one.
Compare that to the American presidential race, where voters are cursed with a difficult choice. With Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, most voters are "against", not "for". Based on polls, Americans don't like either candidate and believe that both have disqualifying flaws, but hate one more than the other. This approximates my own position, which is that Hillary is second-worst candidate imaginable and yet the GOP nominated the very worst. Honestly I feel lucky I cannot vote in the US this year!
A democracy is only as good as the candidates it produces. By that measurement, Croatian democracy is looking far healthier than the USA's. Both candidates have a positive agenda for the future and want the best for the country—not for themselves or some hidden interests—and so no matter what happens on election day Croatia is already a winner.

Kad mu dotuži, ode on u Ameriku. Nego, zašto mu Amerika nije dala državljanstvo kad je njihov plaćenik?
